Jay

Have we ever seen a jay together? Surely we’d remember.
His screaming call, so shrill and unappealing,
In contrast to his plumage –
A soft-pink fawn with flashes of black, white
And blue.
You hear him before you see him -That distinctive squawk
Flapping across the sky
And into a nearby tree.
He hops from branch to branch, shouting,
‘I’m here! I’m here!’
That unmistakable rasping cry.
A crow in disguise,
Yet we know his secret.
