Posthumous Apology

When I learned of your death
My first thought
Was of our last meeting.
It was fleeting
And commonplace.
I don’t think
I’d ever have thought of it again
If you hadn’t passed away.
It was raining
And you looked tired.
Our chat was brief,
Unremarkable –
I couldn’t tell you specifics.
Then we parted ways.
I’m sorry I didn’t think of you more.
I will now think of you often,
And I’m sorry you had to die
For that to happen.
