Just Darkness

You left when it was dark.
I watched the night swallow you up
Like a stone dropped into water.
I kept watching and watching
Until I couldn’t see you;
There was nothing left to see.
I went back inside and sat in the quiet.
I kept expecting your headlights
To illuminate the front room
As you crawled up the drive,
But there was just darkness
And the insatiable ticking of the clock.

  1. Such an awesome way of describing the dark swallowing, like a stone into water. Great job conveying the loss that comes with time and no return.
