First Light

The first hint
Of morning light;
The open window
Welcomes a breeze.
It moves the curtains,
Like a lungful of air
Gently exhaled.
I look to you,
Your face pale in the half-light.
I kiss your shoulder,
Inhale your skin.
In these moments,
I miss you most.
So beautiful you are, beside me,
But unreachable
In the depths of sleep.
Poised in the dead space
Between light and dark;
Wake and sleep,
I sit alone;
So close to you,
Yet overwhelmed by absence.
