All I Could Ever Give

You told me once
That being with me
Felt like home.
I thought about this
For a long time afterwards.
I watched you
Move around the garden
On summer days,
Sunlight clinging to you
Like fabric.
I watched you play
With our son;
You were his light.
He smiled your smile.

You asked me once
Why I could never be
Truly happy
With you.
I cried privately for days
Because it never occurred to me
That you’d notice.
All I could ever give
As an answer
Was silence.
You’d given me love,
Life, a family.
All I could give you
Was silence.
