I found a collection of old photographs and these two are my favourites:
Circus hippo pulling a cart, 1924

I find this picture strange and interesting. You get an idea of how enormous hippos are. The man looks very proud of his hippo.

It’s as if they asked him to smile but he felt very uncomfortable doing so. I like his haphazard hair. This face seems a million miles away from the white make up, the little moustache, the bowler hat. He looks almost older here than in the later pictures of him in character. But it’s an expressive face, an unusual face; a bold face. A very attractive face.
