“As time goes on, you’ll understand. What lasts, lasts; what doesn’t, doesn’t. Time solves most things. And what time can’t solve, you have to solve yourself.” Haruki Murakami, Dance Dance Dance
Something you learn quite quickly when you read a lot is that everything you think and feel in life has been thought and felt by somebody else and has, more importantly, been written down. But somehow, and I don’t know how they do it, these people manage to convey that emotion quite perfectly, using just the right words – the very words that you have failed to find. And then, all of a sudden, this thing you were feeling that you were sure was unique and original and therefore incurable, suddenly feels quite normal, and therefore quite insignificant in the grand scheme of things. It is very comforting to see this thing that has been making you go insane for what seems like forever all wrapped up and summarized in a neat little phrase.
Anyway, this is what Mr Murakami has done for me. Thank you, Mr Murakami. That is just what I needed to hear.
